What Does My HVAC System Include?

The ductwork in your home or business is part of the HVAC system, which also contains the following:

  • Air Filter
  • Coils
  • Blower Motor and Assembly
  • Grills
  • Heat Exchanger

You may need a ladder and a flashlight, but you can check these components yourself for a buildup of dust, dirt, and debris. Before you inspect your HVAC system, make sure to turn off all electricity to the unit by shutting off all breakers, switches, and thermostats.

How Do I Know If My Air Ducts Are Clean?

Check Your Air Filter and Vent Covers

First, inspect your air filter and vent covers. If they’re clear and there’s little to no dust build-up, your HVAC system is in good shape.

Examine Your Heater

Next, look at your heater. The heat exchanger surface should be distinctly clean. Make sure your blower blades are free of debris and oil, and the blower compartment has no lingering dust or debris.

Inspect The Air Conditioning Coil

Locate the AC evaporator coil, which may be in your attic. You can use a flashlight to look for signs of dust. If the coil fins are straight and the coil drain pan is draining properly, your air ducts are clean.
